People for People is committed to receiving all refugees in the Netherlands in a humane way

Press release: Aid organization wants to make a difference with an entrepreneurial approach (Nederlandse versie onderaan pagina)

Amsterdam, September 6, 2022 – Aid organization People for People will immediately provide support to all refugees in the Netherlands, rather than just the victims of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict. The entrepreneurial collective wants to respond to the distressing situation in Dutch reception centers with concrete action and cooperation.

Underlying issues

According to People for People, the influx of refugees from Ukraine has revealed a broad underlying problem in refugee reception in the Netherlands, namely: a lack of information for refugees, overcapacity and a fragmented approach based on country of origin. Currently, almost 44,000 asylum seekers in 140 locations do not have access to the necessary basic facilities.

Earlier this month, the foundation took matters into its own hands and brought a thousand emergency kits with blankets and hygiene products to Ter Apel. With the change of course announced today, the Foundation wants to make a structural contribution to the reception crisis. People for People focuses first on offering a listening ear. Second, on providing information (so that refugees know where they stand). And third, ensuring inclusion (involving the people affected in creating solutions). The collective will also continue to provide ad hoc assistance by arranging food, clothing and places to sleep. It wants to solve urgent problems, such as what we are seeing now in Ter Apel, in an enterprising manner. The aim is that these actions contribute to structurally preventing such problems, so that the organization ultimately becomes redundant.

Hands-on mentality

Ali Niknam (entrepreneur, and one of the founders of People for People): “We saw the degrading situation in Ter Apel and could no longer look away. As entrepreneurs, we are used to responding quickly to changes. That is why we were able to map out within 24 hours where the need was greatest and we immediately took action.”

Collaboration

In the coming weeks, People for People hopes to develop a series of new initiatives to improve living conditions in the reception centers and to guarantee a humane reception for all refugees and asylum seekers in the Netherlands. In addition, the organization is looking for structural solutions to the problems that have arisen, which have become more apparent due to the influx of refugees. To this end, the foundation works together with a variety of companies and volunteers, but also, for example, with parties on location such as Vluchtelingenwerk, the COA and the Red Cross.

Foundation Director Marcella Simons: “Our mission has always been to help as many people in need as possible, regardless of their background. So we sprang into action and saw firsthand how dire the situation really was. We then decided to look at how we can structurally contribute to a solution to the problem with our entrepreneurial approach.”

Enterprising organizations, but also ordinary people who want to contribute to solving these problems are more than welcome to join the People for People collective via WhatsApp.

About People for People

People for People was founded by Ali Niknam (CEO bunq), Joris Beckers (CEO Picnic) and Robert Vis (CEO Messagebird). Shortly after the war in Ukraine started, the entrepreneurs took the initiative to start the foundation to help people affected by the conflict with, for example, places to sleep, food, transport, free bank accounts and SIM cards. The foundation also helps organizations such as Movement On The Ground, Netherlands for Ukraine and Lifeline Ukraine to increase their impact. In total, People for People has helped tens of thousands of people. For example, 500 children were given access to education, more than 11,000 bank accounts were opened and more than 135,000 food, baby and hygiene products were provided. In addition, the Foundation helped more than 170 people find jobs and it distributed 130,000 meals.

Onderliggende problematiek

Hands-on-mentality

Over People for People

People for People is opgericht door Ali Niknam (CEO bunq), Joris Beckers (CEO Picnic) en Robert Vis (CEO Messagebird). In totaal heeft People for People inmiddels tienduizenden mensen geholpen.
