When crisis hits: rapid relief for refugees sleeping outside in Ter Apel

In late 2022, over 700 people – including families with children – were forced to sleep outside the Dutch reception center in Ter Apel, without shelter, hygiene, or basic care. With tents not allowed and conditions rapidly worsening, we responded within 24 hours. We focused on what was possible, always putting humanity first. In the first 48 hours, we distributed over 1,000 blankets, mats, warm clothing, and hygiene kits, working closely with grassroots NGOs to provide immediate relief.

As diseases emerged from the lack of sanitation, we quickly scaled up hygiene support. We mapped exact needs and coordinated with all active NGOs on the ground – Red Cross, Refugee Council, Migrate, and others – working side by side without labels. Together, we kept people warm, dry, and clothed. For months, we supported the Red Cross with daily supplies of essential items, ensuring they could continue their presence and response.

Acting fast, listening first

When many didn’t know how to help due to restrictions, we focused on what could be done, and with whom. We listened first, connected partners and volunteers, and acted fast. In urgent cases, we even rented buses to prevent families from spending nights in the cold rain. This was collective action, driven by one clear principle: humanity first. When there’s no time to waste, we don’t waste it.

Here’s how you can help

Crises like these demand more than charity – they demand action, coordination, and resources on the ground.

Your business can help by contributing supplies, transport, or specialist services. We work with partners to pre-position emergency kits and mobilise support quickly in collaboration with trusted local networks.

  • Donate essential items like hygiene products, clothing and shelter materials
  • Provide logistics and transport, including warehouse space or buses for emergency shelter
  • Offer expertise or services – from research, to providing warm meals or Wi-Fi access

Every contribution helps create rapid, dignified support for people in crisis – right when it matters most.
