For thousands of unaccompanied children arriving in the Netherlands, life in reception centres can feel isolating and uncertain. Far from family and home, many carry the weight of trauma and stress, while navigating a new environment with limited emotional support. These children urgently need more than shelter – they need connection, care, and a sense of belonging.
That’s why we created People for People Days: monthly, community-led events that offer unaccompanied minors meaningful moments of joy, human connection, and mental relief. Backed by psychological insight and developed with input from our volunteer community – many with refugee backgrounds themselves – these days provide not only fun, but also safe space for trust-building, self-expression, and emotional wellbeing.
Community at the centre
Each event is powered by local communities, volunteers, and trainers who work hand-in-hand with reception centres to meet the unique needs of each location. By involving people with lived experience and cultural understanding, we design programmes that foster resilience, dignity, and hope for the future.
