April recap: from collective action to community connection

From large-scale gatherings to local community spaces and international responses, April was shaped by connection in different forms. Across contexts, the focus remained the same: turning willingness into practical action by connecting partners, resources and needs on the ground.

In a world where developments shift quickly, we are not always able to respond everywhere immediately and publicly, but we always remain closely connected to partners in affected regions – listening and understanding where support is most needed, and where we are able to contribute.

At People for People, this is what guides our work across local and international contexts.

Young Impact Summit: turning energy into action

This month, we joined the Young Impact Summit as a social partner, bringing together 500+ participants from businesses and NGOs.

Together with our partner Clean the World, we led the Equal Opportunities workshop.
200 participants packed 1,000 hygiene kits and wrote personal cards for children in Ukraine.

Many businesses want to contribute, but don’t always know how. Moments like these show what becomes possible when that willingness is translated into something tangible.

Galaxy: from space to community

At the COA Galaxy location in Amsterdam, we hosted a People for People Day alongside the opening of a new Social Sport Hub, together with Hocus Pocus and partners.

What started with football, boxing, dance, art, music and shared meals quickly became something more. Residents didn’t just participate, they connected, stayed, and shaped the space together.

For many, especially young people, access to spaces like this is limited. Moments like these create a sense of belonging and something to build on beyond a single day.

Alongside this, 10 footballs were distributed to COA sport coaches at locations in Tafelbergweg and Sloten, helping ensure sports activities can continue consistently.

International: responding where it matters most

Lebanon: addressing food insecurity in displacement

In Lebanon, the displacement crisis continues to put pressure on access to food and basic services.

Together with our partner Beit el Baraka, we supported internally displaced families in shelters across Beirut. During Ramadan, daily hot meals reached 310 people across two shelters, providing a total of 4,860 meals.

In a context of ongoing uncertainty, consistent access to food contributes not only to nutrition, but also to dignity and stability.

Ukraine: access to education, in practice

In Ukraine, earlier efforts continue to take shape on the ground.

In Krolevets, around 50 km from the frontline, a school bus we helped mobilise is now in daily use. Working through partners who identified the need locally, the bus connects children to the only school in the area equipped with a shelter, at a time when public transport is no longer functioning.

What started as a locally identified need is now a practical solution supporting access to education and daily structure.

Partnerships: unlocking impact through collaboration

Young Colfield: when talent meets purpose

This month, we highlighted our collaboration with Young Colfield, showing how companies can contribute beyond financial support.

Young professionals supported us in strengthening volunteer management, focusing on structure, communication and systems, from intake to engagement.

The result: more clarity, faster activation and a stronger foundation for our network.

At the same time, the collaboration created value on both sides, combining fresh perspectives with direct, practical impact.

It’s a clear example that contribution doesn’t always start with funding, but can begin with people and their skills.

Looking ahead

As we move into the coming months, several initiatives continue to develop, both locally and internationally.

One area we are currently exploring further came out of our recent visits to COA locations, where we looked at the transition phase for young people aged 18-23.

A key takeaway was the gap that often appears when support structures shift from AMV COA to regular AZC. Once young people turn 18, guidance can drop off quickly, while many are still navigating basic steps toward independence, from managing finances to finding work or accessing services.

We are exploring how this gap could be better supported, including whether our volunteer network could play a role in creating more continuity during this transition phase.

These conversations are still in an early stage, but help inform how we think about potential next steps.

Across all of this, one thing remains central: building the right connections to turn intent into action.

April showed that impact can take many forms, from large-scale mobilisation to small, meaningful moments of connection. Both matter. And both are needed.
